Lenthall House

General

Lenthall House

Lenthall House offers both full and weekly boarding for boys and girls from eleven to eighteen years of age. Boarders are generally expected to stay on to the end of the year 11, and most stay to complete 'A' level courses in the sixth form and go to University. (Not all boarders start in Year 7).

Full Boarding and Weekly Boarding

Full boarders are in the majority but weekly boarding is available. A system of exeats is organised for the midway point between the beginning of term, half term holiday, and end of term. Students are encouraged to take these breaks. Students are also allowed away at other weekends by parental request, for example to visit family or stay with friends.

Weekly boarders are expected to leave the House between 1520 and 1900 each Friday and return to the House between 1630 and 2000 each Sunday. They must sign out and sign in with the House staff on duty. They should book Friday evening meal or Sunday evening meal if it is required. It is assumed that weekly boarders do their weekend "prep" at home if they arrive back in the House after 1700 on Sunday and depart before 1700 on Friday.

Division of Responsibility.

The Deputy Head of Burford School (Head of Boarding Education), is responsible for all boarding staff and boarding matters and leads a team consisting of resident Housemistress and boarding tutors, all of whom are responsible for the welfare of boarders. This team of staff will have a good knowledge of boarders' academic progress and are informed of any pastoral problems which might occur within and out of school. Each member of this team has an allocated 'family' of boarders for whom they are responsible. All duty staff are there to help and take a very personal interest in boarding students. These staff are very well supported by the Bursar and Matrons who are also actively involved in the childrens welfare. They are available for consultation with parents and to offer help or advice.

The Deputy Head (Head of Boarding) and the respective Heads of Year are responsible for matters of an academic nature and for incidents of pastoral concern which occur in school; the Head of Boarding should always be contacted in respect seeking time away from school.

Health

There is a very pleasant, well equipped sick bay and medical room run by three house matrons. Boarders are all registered at the local Burford doctors surgery which is attached to the cottage hospital.

Meals

A varied and balanced diet is provided in house. All boarders eat lunch in school during the week, this is either packed and taken from the Boarding House or cooked at school, all other meals are taken in the dining room. Vegetarians are catered for, and every effort is made to cater for medically prescribed diets. the house has its own team of catering staff and meals are of a very high standard. Any specific dietary requests should be taken up with the Bursar. Meals are also supplemented by afternoon 'tea', 'supper' and evening toast.

Accommodation

Students are accommodated in well furnished dormitories which vary in size and number of occupants. Larger dormitories operate generally with 5 - 8 occupants. Smaller dormitories are allocated to senior students with 1 - 4 occupants with 6 th form rooms allocated as study bedrooms.
