NQT Recruitment Morning

Burford School warmly invites you to a

Recruitment Morning

on Tuesday 31 January 2017

Set on the edge of the Cotswolds, Burford School has been providing outstanding educational opportunities within and beyond the classroom for almost 450 years.  Today we offer first class learning and a wide range of enriching experiences to nearly 1200 students. Our academic results speak for themselves, but it is the additional opportunities available for staff and students that really set us apart.

Whether that be the excellent induction and support for all our new staff, at whatever point they join us in their careers, the opportunities to join school trips and activities all year round, or the fact that we are a State Boarding School providing residential care for nearly a hundred UK and overseas boarding students, there really is something for everyone.

Graded as ‘Outstanding’ for Leadership and Management and for Pastoral Care in our most recent Ofsted report, the school continues to develop and grow. Applications for places with us are increasing rapidly as our reputation for providing an outstanding environment for student progress and well-being grows.

We believe that the best way to see what the school is really like is to visit us.  For this reason we are holding an informal recruitment morning on Tuesday 31 January 2017 giving you the opportunity to see us at work and talk to our current staff and students.

You will be able to meet the Headteacher, Mrs Kathy Haig, and Deputy Headteacher, Mr James Pilgrim, as well as discuss possible forthcoming job opportunities. You will also have a chance to meet the students, have a tour of both the Day School and Boarding Department, and chat to our current and recent NQTs about what life is really like at Burford. You can read what some of them say in advance of your visit if you wish.

We will be running two sessions, from 9.00am to 11.00am and 11.30am to 1.30pm. If you would like to attend, please contact Mrs Marshall on indicating which session would suit you. She will also be able to give you any further information you require.

We do hope that you will join us and look forward to meeting you.

Getting creative with Spacejackers author

On Monday 16 January, we welcomed the fantastic Huw Powell, author of the Spacejackers series, to Burford School. He told us of where he found his inspiration, how much work he put into getting published, and plucked ideas from the heads of our Year 7s to create our own Space Pirate Queen.

Afterwards, he kindly gave up part of his lunchtime to sign books for eager pupils and staff. It was a brilliant session, much enjoyed by everyone who attended.

Great start for Boarders’ New Football Team

With the continued expansion growth of junior boarding, the Boarding House has, for the first time, launched an U13 Boarders Football Team to further broaden the weekend Activity Programme. Under the captaincy of Kevin Opare Saforo, the team headed to The Oratory School in Reading for their first ever fixture.
In wet and slippery conditions, The Oratory took an early lead when a shot from distance squirmed past Mauritian goalkeeper Dylan Roberts. Undeterred, Burford quickly levelled with a fine finish from Pedro Morcillo Lopez, before renewed pressure from The Oratory saw Burford concede a freakish own-goal, an attempted clearance skewing off an unfortunate boot from 20 yards and looping into the top corner, Burford heading into the break 1-2 down.
A change in shape brought Burford back into the game and Pedro doubled his tally, forcing a defensive mix up and pouncing to level the game at 2-2. The team then enjoyed their best period of the game, hitting the bar and spurning three other good chances to take the lead. With the clock running down, The Oratory pulled away with two superbly struck goals from range to take the game away from Burford, when all supporters agreed that a draw would have been a fair result. Ultimately, a 2-4 reverse, but a very promising start and the team will look to build on this in their next fixture against the Royal School, Haslemere, in a fortnight.

We thank our friends at The Oratory for a great game played in superb spirit and for their generous hospitality and look forward to the ‘second leg’ in March.

7JPE master Churros-con-chocolate

At the end of the Christmas holidays students in 7JPE made churros-con-chocolate as part of their Spanish holiday homework. A churro is a fried-dough pastry based snack. They are piped from a syringe-like tool with a star-shaped nozzle and they can stay long and thick or be made into a knot. They are normally dipped into a chocolate sauce or are sprinkled with sugar like a doughnut. The students created some delicious churros which they enjoyed eating! The best ones were from Tobi Hickman, James Elderfield and Nancy Hitchcock.
