Lunchtime Concert Series Starts in Style
Friday saw our first in a new series of lunchtime concerts, being held in the Music Department. The focus for this week’s event was our string players, and three of our Sixth Form students, Harry, Emma and Eleanor played contrasting pieces including works by Bach and Bloch to an audience comprised of school staff and their peers.
The concert provided an ideal opportunity for them to perform in a relaxed environment and to practise for their upcoming exams and auditions. Well done to our three musicians for starting off the series in style!
Argentinian Students Talk & Tango
We were very lucky to host a group of fourteen Argentinian students from Northfield College in Escobar, province of Buenos Aires.
The students and teachers were on a two week hockey tour of the British Isles and took time out of their busy schedule to visit Burford School and talk to our Year 9 students about many aspects of Argentinian culture.
They talked about the different landscapes, traditions, music and food and our students were able to taste some Argentinian delicacies and witness tango dancing.
This is the second year the group have visited Burford and proved very exciting for our students. We look forward to welcoming them back.

The Old Burfordians’ Second Reunion
Saturday 22 September 2018
The Old Burfordians held their second reunion on Saturday 22 September and what a lovely afternoon it was despite the inclement weather. Ex students and staff from a number of decades attended and a good catch up was had by all over a delicious afternoon tea.
An opportunity to have a wander around the school site and have a nose into different departments to see how they have changed over the years, was welcomed by those who were happy to brave the weather.
There was much fun and laughter as guests searched for themselves or friends in the fantastic photo display running from the 1930s up to the present day.
We look forward to the next Old Burfordians’ event; Quiz & Curry Night on Friday 18 January 2019.
Petition for Safer Speed Limit
Politics students from Burford School delivered a petition to County Hall last week, appealing for a reduction in the speed limit on the A40 outside the school. The request, which was signed by staff, parents, students and members of the public, would like to see the speed limit brought down from 40mph to 30mph.
Mr Staniforth, Business Manager at the school said, ‘I believe Burford is the only school in the county with such a high speed limit right outside its doors. With the steady growth in popularity of the school and the increased amount of traffic that brings, a move to reduce the limit has now become a matter of urgency. The safety of our students is a key priority for us, so we feel very strongly that the limit should be reduced to at least 30mph along this stretch.’
The students delivered the petition to Councillor Liam Walker, a former student of Burford who tweeted, ‘Great to have pupils from my former school addressing us at County Hall with a petition requesting that the Council install a 30mph speed limit outside the school gates on the A40 – happy to support this change along with colleagues’.
Two of the students gave a presentation in support of the petition to Chairman Gill Sander. After their meeting, the whole group were taken on a tour of the council offices.
