Tenner Challenge Team Create A Buzz!

Tenner Challenge Team Create A Buzz!

Congratulations to our Year 10 Tenner Challenge team:  Daisy, Biba, Hannah, Neve & Campbell for winning the national competition for the fourth year running for their age category 15+.

The ‘Bee Kind and Wrap it’ product which is a natural alternative to plastic wrap for food storage and made from beeswax and cloth, wowed the judges.

Over 21,000 students took part, so an especially fantastic result considering they finished their entry whilst in lockdown.

Students Go for Gold!

In August, thirteen Year 13 students completed their Gold DofE Expedition.

As schools are currently not allowed to run residential trips due to the current pandemic situation, the students were able to complete the camping component of the expedition directly through the School of Outdoors company.

Spread over four days in the Chilterns, the students started out in Shiplake, taking in Marlow, High Wycombe and Watlington. There was the usual mixture of weather with one day of torrential rain!

The teams completed between 20-30km routes each day, carrying all equipment and food required for the duration of the expedition. There were lots of blisters and a few injuries but the students showed great resilience to complete their expedition successfully.

MP Impressed by School Safety Measures

On Friday 11 September, we welcomed our local MP, Robert Courts, to witness first-hand the control measures that have successfully been implemented to ensure that staff and students are safe following their return to school. Accompanied by Mrs Haig, Headteacher and Mr Jouny, Deputy Headteacher, Mr Courts followed the newly designed one-way system around the site and learnt how students are working in separate ‘Year Group bubbles’.

Mr Courts met with some of our student representatives and watching from a socially distanced open door, he observed that with simple precautions, lessons are continuing and learning is well underway for Burford students.

He also congratulated the school on another set of outstanding A-level and GCSE results.

Mrs Haig, Headteacher said,  ‘It was lovely to be able to welcome Robert to our school and we appreciate the interest he continues to show in the education of our students. We are understandably proud of how our students and staff have embraced the changes we have made to enable the school to fully open.’

Robert Courts MP commented, ‘It was a pleasure to visit Burford School to see the measures school leaders have put in place to ensure the safety of students and staff. I pay tribute to school staff who have worked incredibly hard to make classrooms safe, so that all students can return to school and continue their education in the best possible environment.’

Burford has a National Champion!

Our Equestrians have enjoyed great success since lockdown restrictions were lifted.  In August, Sophie S, Courtney, Lottie W, Poppy C and Sophie J travelled to Hickstead in Sussex to compete in the NSEA Championships.

  • Sophie S rode a superb round in the 95 cm Show Jumping competition and finished second out of one hundred and five competitors.
  • The 100 Show Jumping team battled through an enormous field to finish fifth.
  • Poppy C and her horse Blue went on to the 110cm Elite Show Jumping class and rode the only clear round of the day to win the class and be crowned National Champions.

An awesome and well deserved achievement!

Boarders Walk on the Wild Side!

On Saturday, our boarding students enjoyed a trip to the Cotswold Wildlife Park and spent a lovely afternoon in the sunshine visiting all the animals.

Exploring the park in groups, they saw an incredible variety of different species, from penguins and tortoises to lions and giraffes. The brightly coloured parrots were a particular favourite, as were all the baby animals.

Some students were particularly lucky to spot a tiny baby monkey clinging to its mother’s back and an intrepid group even braved the insect and reptile houses and saw crocodiles, snakes, and an enormous tarantula!

At the end, there was a chance to relax together and indulge in hot-dogs and ice-creams in the sun. It was a fantastic trip and everyone enjoyed seeing the animals and spending time with new friends.
