A-Level Results 2023

Back to News

Burford School is celebrating a strong set of A-Level results this year, with the majority of our students now heading off to top universities to continue their studies.

This year, 23% of our grades are A*-A, 57% are A*-B, and 80% are A*-C with 42% of our students achieving at least one A* or A. This is all the more impressive as this year Ofqual, the exams watchdog, announced that tougher grade boundaries would be imposed, lowering results nationally.

Of the 123 students in our Year 13 cohort, 106 students applied to university and, at the time of writing, 102 have places confirmed at university. The breadth of destinations of our A-Level students shows the expansive range of interests of our students. Our students have been successful in gaining places all over the UK, including Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, Belfast, Sheffield, Loughborough, Bristol and Manchester. Our students will take up places on a variety of courses, from Paramedic Science, Physics, Aviation Management, Economics, Philosophy to Primary Education, Musical Theatre and Aeronautics and Astronautics.

Some exceptional examination results for our students will see them attend, amongst others, Exeter to study Clinical Psychology, Bath to study Psychology, Southampton to study Human Geography, Birmingham to study Medicine and Oxford to study Earth Sciences.

Camille Duff

Indeed, Camille Duff (pictured above) is heading to the University of Exeter to study Clinical Psychology after achieving an A* in Psychology, A in Sociology, A in Geography and B in Ancient History. Camille commented, ‘Sixth Form has been an amazing experience for me as I have formed many friendships and have learnt so much about subjects I am truly interested in'.

'[My results] really show my hard work has paid off and that my interest in my subjects was a key asset in my achievement. Burford School has shaped me as a student and I am so proud to be leaving in such as positive way’.

Meanwhile, Freya Hickman is heading to the University of Southampton to study Human Geography after achieving an A in Geography, A in Sociology and B in Biology. Freya commented, ‘I was so happy when opening my results this morning and finding out I had achieved my place'.

'Sixth Form at Burford has set me up perfectly for my next steps and I have loved the experience. The support has been amazing, and I feel ready to start my degree and see what university has to offer!’

Marcus Renwick

Other outstanding individual results include those of Marcus Renwick (pictured above) who achieved an A* in English Literature and Language, A in History, A in Sociology and A in Economics and Connor Bracey who achieved an A* in Economics, A in Mathematics and B in Physics.

Mr Albrighton, Headteacher, commented, ‘We knew that students were going to perform well this year, but with Ofqual announcing that tougher grade boundaries were to be imposed we could not predict with confidence quite how well. I am delighted that our students have achieved such a strong set of results and are now set for their next step after Burford School. Today’s A-Level results are not just the outcome of students’ efforts in the exam hall, but the culmination of two years of endeavour within and beyond the classroom, with the support of their parents and carers and teachers.’

Mrs Brown, Head of Sixth Form, added, ‘I am pleased that the vast majority of our students, on receiving their results today, are now able to embark on their chosen pathway after Burford, whether that be to university, an apprenticeship or employment. Parents and carers have been incredibly supportive throughout their children’s time in Sixth Form and teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure students have had every opportunity to reach for their potential. The Sixth Form Team and I wish all our students the best of luck as they begin their next chapter after Burford.’
