The Department offers an extensive extra-curricular programme of sports activities and also leadership training at lunchtimes and after school from 3.00pm-4.30pm.

To enable students to participate, late buses operate on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are over 300 inter-school fixtures during the course of any one school year.  These can be at District, County and National Level. Sport and PE Clubs – Terms 1 & 2

Traditional team sports are offered with increasing opportunity for all.  When other schools are able, we will play more than one team per year group. We believe that the key to enjoyment is balanced competition and strive to reach this with all fixtures.  To meet the demand of extra-curricular fixtures, we often complete against local private schools.  This provides extra opportunity and increased challenge for our students.  We play a full part in all District competitions with a proud record of success.

Students are offered opportunities to compete in individual sports such as athletics, badminton, cross country and swimming.  Due to our commitment to extra-curricular sport and cricket we are one of the few state schools to appear regularly in the prestigious ‘Cricketer Top 100 Schools’.

House Competitions

House competitions in all major sports are also organised by the department. The annual Senior and Junior Sports Days are well supported by the whole school and events take place in both Track and Field. Cups are awarded to outstanding athletes in each year group and points won go towards the yearly total for each School House.

International Competitions

The Department is fortunate to host schools, on an annual basis, from Argentina and Australia for rugby, hockey, netball and cricket. As well as playing rugby, a regular trip to Twickenham is also arranged to enable the students to share in the skill, excitement and spectacle of a professional game and those interested in tennis compete in the ‘Road to Wimbledon’ competition.

Major Sports Tours

Planning is underway to develop a comprehensive touring cycle so student get the opportunity to play sport abroad.  We hope to run junior tours during October half terms and bi-annual senior tours during the summer holidays.

To date, there have been seven major sports tours organised by the department:

  • Australia 1997
  • Canada 2000
  • Australia and New Zealand 2003
  • Australia 2009
  • Singapore, Australia and New Zealand 2013
  • Australia 2016
  • New Zealand and Australia 2019
