Old Burfordians Reunion – Saturday 21 September

The third Old Burfordians’ Reunion took place on Saturday 21 September and what a lovely afternoon it was.  Old Burfordians from a number of decades attended and a good catch-up was had by all over afternoon tea with delicious cakes.

The guest speaker was the lovely Sally Scott (pictured with Mr. Fuddles), who left Burford in 1999 and now has a successful acting career working regularly in theatre and in TV in shows, such as Holby City, Silent Witness and Lewis. What a delight it was to have her here.

There was much laughter as guests searched for themselves or friends in the fantastic photo display taken from our huge archive, running from the 1930’s up to the present day.

A huge thank you to all those who attended!

Lunch at the Boarding House

On Wednesday 26 June 2019 we had  a second gathering of past staff who met together at the Boarding House for an excellent two course lunch. It was pleasing to note that we had increased our numbers from last year up to a magnificent 42  with staff returning from London, West Yorkshire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire as well as locally.

The occasion once again gave us all a chance to catch up on one another’s news and it was wonderful to hear that one of our previous Headteacher’s, Derek Glover, had this year received Maundy Money from Her Majesty the Queen.

We have every expectation that the numbers for lunch will be even more next year as this occasion is becoming part of the history of the school.

Please contact our Alumni Officer, Mrs C Hawker, at if you are an ex member of staff who would like to attend the lunch in the future.

Quiz & Curry Night

Our first ‘Quiz & Curry Night’, hosted by our now firmly established alumni group (The Old Burfordians), was held on Friday 18 January and what a fun evening it was!

Old Burfordians, staff and parents made up teams of eight people and pitted their wits against each other to win a meal at the Witney Blanket Hall Pie Shop – a prize generously donated by Mr Richard Martin (Governor) and Miss Eleanor Martin (Alumni Treasurer).

A delicious supper, provided by the ‘Bilash’ Curry House in Carterton, proved to be very popular, with a variety of curry dishes to choose from and a wide range of trimmings.

Visitors gave generously to the raffle and, before the winning quiz team was announced, an array of prizes were won, raising an impressive £800.

The evening was a great success and a similar night looks set to become a feature of the Old Burfordians growing list of annual events.

The Old Burfordians’ Second Reunion

Saturday 22 September 2018

The Old Burfordians held their second reunion on Saturday 22 September and what a lovely afternoon it was despite the inclement weather. Ex students and staff from a number of decades attended and a good catch up was had by all over a delicious afternoon tea.

An opportunity to have a wander around the school site and have a nose into different departments to see how they have changed over the years, was welcomed by those who were happy to brave the weather.

There was much fun and laughter as guests searched for themselves or friends in the fantastic photo display running from the 1930s up to the present day.

We look forward to the next Old Burfordians’ event;  Quiz & Curry Night on Friday 18 January 2019.

Our First Alumni Reunion – 2017

The Burford School Alumni held their first reunion on Saturday 23 September and what a huge success it was. Ex-students and staff from a number of decades travelled from far and wide (including Australia and Romania) to come and reminisce.

After a brief introduction to the day’s proceedings by our Chairman, Stuart Norridge, and the Headteacher, Kathy Haig, our guests headed down to the West Dining Room for afternoon tea.  The tea and cakes prepared by our school chef, Carlene Black, were absolutely superb and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

An opportunity to wander around the school, explore different departments to see how they have changed over the years, visit the Acre and see our current residents, Matilda, Womble and, of course Mr Fuddles, was welcomed by everyone.  The Boarding Bus – lent to us for a few days by the Boarding School’s Association – was on display giving former boarders a sense of how much more homely boarding has become over the years.

There was much fun and laughter as guests searched for themselves or friends in the fantastic photo display running from the 1930s up to the present day.

During the day guests enjoyed music from one of our string quartets and the school jazz band played three stunning sets of music throughout the evening while guests tucked into the delicious BBQ, chatted with old friends and made use of the PTA bar!

We look forward to the next reunion!

Photographic Evening – 19 October 2016

On the 19 October 2016 we played host to a number of ex–Burfordians who came in to look at an eclectic collection of photographs ranging from the late 1800s to the 2000s.  There were lots of images on view, showcasing the whole school and different year groups, as well as photos from boarding, musicals, drama, trips, sports and general school life. All of the photos form a small number that are housed in the school archives, and Mr and Mrs Norridge are currently hard at work collating and attempting to name each and every student and event – surely a mammoth task! It was great, therefore, to have so many students from the 1950s to recent leavers and current and ex-members of staff turning up to help us with this enormous identification task. We would welcome any copies of photos that you would like to have added to the Archives. Though please remember to name the people if you can!

Please send any images to Catherine Bishop our Alumni Officer (

Launch Event

On 2 July we held our first alumni event inviting past students and staff who had signed up to join the newly established Burford School Association. We combined this event with the opening of our newly refurbished and re-thatched pavilion and the annual match between our 1st XI and the visiting MCC team.

IMG_6551The weather held and it was lovely to have some very recent alumni together with a number who had left us many years ago.

CRICKET_BURFORD_MCC_387Mr Luke Ryan, Captain of the Oxfordshire Minor Counties Team, very kindly cut the ribbon on the pavilion and Mr Richard Martin, one of our Governors who has been instrumental in launching the alumni group, gave a short speech. After a tough match the MCC triumphed but everyone agreed that it had been a wonderful afternoon and we look forward to many more alumni events in the coming years.
