Removing the Gearbox: Regaining Control in a World of Automation
Two weekends ago, I was having an issue with my lawnmower. The wheels were locking. Although the blade was spinning underneath the gearbox that directed power from the engine to the wheels at the back had somehow frozen. In a fit of frustration, and impatience, I decided to completely remove the locked gearbox that helped drive the wheels. Without it, the blades continued to spin, in fact even more powerfully, but now the mower only moved when I chose to push. I realised that though I was working that little bit harder to push the mower actually I had gained full control again, of pace, direction, and purpose.
It made me think about how often we let “automation” take over in our own lives. Our mobile phones, most notably, have become like that gearbox constantly driving us forward with notifications, messages and updates, often before we’ve decided where we actually want to go. The energy and connection they offer are useful, but they can also take us off course.
Sometimes, it’s worth “removing the gearbox” for a while, switching off, slowing down, and remembering that we don’t have to be pulled along by every reminder or alert. The power is still there, but the control returns to us.
As we move into half term, I want to thank staff, students, parents and carers for supporting the school in what has been a brilliant term. There has indeed been a great deal of industry in the classrooms and behind the scenes (including in boarding). The coming week is a time to pause, dip the clutch and disengage the gears. I wish you a calm and thoughtful week ahead, one where you set the pace, and steer your own direction.
