Forces Families

As a state boarding school, with a long history of educating children from forces families, Burford provides a welcoming, close-knit community where pupils can feel settled and secure. Forces children are a significant and valued part of our community accounting for approximately 10-15% of our school roll. For families managing postings, deployments and relocations, boarding can offer continuity and stability and give children the opportunity to thrive, participate and reach their full potential.

Located just ten minutes from RAF Brize Norton, Burford is an established choice for service families across Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and the South of England. We are within easy reach of RAF Benson, RAF Fairford and the Army communities of Salisbury Plain among others and provide a weekly shuttle to our local train station for convenient access. Burford is also well connected to London and the UK's major airports, making it a practical choice for children whose parents are currently serving overseas. In recent years, we have welcomed students with parents stationed in Belgium, Germany, and the Falkland Islands among others.

Boarders who would like to maintain a connection with the military community can join the Burford Detachment of Army Cadets or the 2267 (Brize Norton) Squadron of RAF Air Cadets from Year 8 onwards as part of our extra-curricular programme. Burford has two dedicated Forces Advocates who work with students and families to ensure that their needs are understood alongside external agencies and our military community partners. Special events and activities are also provided throughout the year helping them to build friendships and share experiences with other pupils who understand the unique nature of Service life.

Continuity of Education Allowance (CEA)

The Continuity of Education Allowance is a financial support scheme from the Ministry of Defense to support the children of service personnel who are posted overseas or asked to relocate. If eligible, military families can expect to pay 8% of the boarding fees directly while the remainder is covered by the CEA funding. Burford School provides additional support by offering a 50% discount on the deposit fee to secure a boarding place.
