We believe that high-quality language education fosters students’ curiosity and deepens their understanding of the world. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is also a lifelong skill relevant to further education, employment and leisure. As such, our Modern Foreign Language department aims to equip our students with the ability to use a language other than English effectively and confidently for the purpose of practical communication. Students are also encouraged to develop a greater understanding and appreciation towards other cultures and civilisations.

To complement classroom learning, students participate in a range of extracurricular activities which promote language acquisition and greater knowledge about and connection with different cultures. These include trips and exchanges abroad, pen pal projects, talks with language experts and visits to foreign language plays.

Key Stage Three

At Key Stage Three, students study two languages. All students study Spanish and can choose between studying either German or French. We place great emphasis on developing students’ confidence and competency in their reading, listening, speaking and writing skills, with lessons structured to enable students to succeed in all four areas. Across all languages, we focus on embedding core vocabulary and grammatical structures such as the present, past and future tenses alongside correct word order, gender of nouns and adjectives and expression of opinions. Taught in mixed-ability classes, our schemes of learning include differentiated tasks to ensure students are suitably challenged, encouraged to think and learn independently to build language acquisition and are prepared for further study if they so wish.
